Mid Sweden European Office represents the counties of Jämtland and Västernorrland in Sweden. This region is located in the geographical middle of Sweden and the Nordic Countries. The region is characterized by its beautiful nature with great diversity, from urban to rural areas, from mountains to coastline.
Tourism industry is very important for the region and is a significant contributing factor to the vivid rural areas. Examples are the UNESCO world heritage area of the High Coast in Västernorrland and the greatest mountain resort of Sweden, Åre in Jämtland.
Business and industry in the region consist of world leading forest industry companies such as SCA and Metso, but also of many small enterprises in the field of clean technology. Furthermore business in Mid Sweden also includes many small entrepreneurs working with locally produced food. The county of Jämtland and the city Östersund has been selected by Unesco to the Creative Cities Network as a Creative City of Gastronomy because of the high level of gastronomy and food craftwork in the region. About the Creative Cities network and Jämtland/Östersund. The city of Östersund was also selected City of gastronomy by the Swedish government in 2010.
There is a rich cultural life in Mid Sweden with music festivals such as Storsjöyran in Östersund, Jamtli historical outdoors museum, Cultural heritage of the industrial society in Västernorrland etc. The region is also well known for its strong tradition of winter sports and both Västernorrland and Jämtland counties are home to many sport stars such as ice hockey players Peter Forsberg, Fredrik Modin, Daniel and Henrik Sedin, biathlete Magdalena Forsberg and Helena Ekholm, cross country skiers Mathias and Thobias Fredriksson, downhill skier Anna Ottosson and snowboarder Richard Richardsson.
The Mid Sweden University is the first network university in Sweden. Campuses are located in Sundsvall, Härnösand and Östersund.
